Jacob vs. Edward

There are a lot of things that can be said about both Jacob and Edward, and this debate has probably been talked through a thousand times. But for me there’s never really been much of a contest. I’ve always been a part of the Jacob camp, trying to make my tiny voice drown out the praises of Edward. Billions of girls are in love with Edward, and I just don’t get it.

Edward is cold. Not just literally, but emotionally. He withholds things from Bella “for her own good”. Tells her who she can be friends with and who she can’t. He has a totally dominant, smothering presence over her. I know he means well, and I know he loves her, but that’s just too much for me. He’s overprotective, even going so far as to break up with Bella (once again, “for her own good”). Am I the only person in the world who thinks Bella should be able to judge for herself? Is Edward her father or her boyfriend? Since when is a boyfriend who controls your life socially acceptable? It’s not like the guy has nothing going for him. He is incredibly sweet, and he is going through of trouble just to be with her. But it’s not just the over protectiveness. Edward doesn’t really understand Bella. He never gets her or what she’s thinking. Of course, he never shares his troubles with Bella either. In fact, he often lies to her to cover them up. Is that a cornerstone of a good relationship? Lying so that you don’t have to share things? He says he withholds important information from her so that she doesn’t have to worry. I don’t get that.

Jacob, on the other hand, is always honest with Bella. He doesn’t hide things from her even if he knows it will make her worry(unless mystical forces literally steal the words from his mouth – and even then, he finds a way). He isn’t Bella’s father, he’s her friend. They sometimes do stupid things together, but isn’t that kinda the point? Jacob brings Bella freedom – freedom to do whatever she wants, whenever she wants, and still have him beside her no matter how stupid it is. Jacob always knows what Bella’s thinking, in a way that Edward never does. Not because he reads minds, but because he pays attention. After Edward leaves, he knows that she doesn’t like listening to music without her ever having to say a word. And, of course, he’s her personal sun.

What really struck me as truth, though, is what Jacob says in the third book. About how he and Bella would have been soul mates if it wasn’t for Edward, and that Edward was her drug. How true. Bella craves Edward constantly, goes through emotional withdrawls when he leaves. Edward is Bella’s drug. And that just underlines for me how unhealthy their relationship really is.

(This is a bit of a rough draft. Will edit later to lengthen/make better with quotes/page #’s from the book).
